Cheers to riding bikes on the beach at HILTON HEAD

My grandmother used to always tell me my middle name was, “GO!” as I was always up for an adventure.  Admittedly, I am a homebody, but I have a real taste for wanderlust.

Which is why I decided I might as well start travel blogging.  It combines two things I love: written expression and travel. Plus it is a way to archive our trips.

This summer my family got together for a week in Hilton Head. None of us knew what to expect. We wanted a beach that would land halfway from my brother’s house in North Carolina and halfway from our home-place in Tennessee.

The requirements?

Beachfront. Good seafood. A little golf (for my dad and son). And the ability to fish off the shore.

After a little look at the map we booked a beach house in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

I have to tell you. Our favorite thing about this place wasn’t even on our radar.  But boy they were all over the ROADS & BEACHES.

What am I talking about?

BIKES!

I’m most accustomed to the powder white sand of the Gulf Coast.  I had no idea that riding a bike on the beach was even a thing. But here, on the coast of the Atlantic in the grand expanse of the packed sand, bikes rule.  And those bikes tempted us to take a ride.

So a couple days into our vacation we called a local rental place (we used South Beach Bicycle Rentals) and got our order in.  They delivered a fleet of bikes by mid-morning of the following day.

Every single one of us (ranging from four year old to sixty year old) had a blast.  The little cousins rode and rode. My four-year old even took off without training wheels for the first time ever.

The more athletic parents (meaning NOT ME) took their little ones for extended rides on the bike that featured a child seat.  NOTE:  be prepared your child might fall asleep on the child seat and you as the parent will ride for a period up to 40 minutes to keep said child peacefully asleep.  Hey…you get your workout and child nap time at the same time.  Win. Win.

Yes, bike riding is one of our favorite memories of this beach trip.

We say CHEERS to Hilton Head and beach bike riding.  We can’t wait to return.

Have you ever riden a bike on the beach? If not…coast over to Hilton Head and give it a go.
