Garden

Last week we tilled the soil, dug the holes, and spread the seed. The backyard garden is now started!

There is something innately satisfying about digging our bare hands into the cold Earth. It’s a spring evening at its finest. The expectation of abundance. The promise that God’s ways bring forth life. Into the ground went the promise of kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Other plants will join later.

Perry always has us start our garden the night before a big rain is expected. This way nature provides the water. We just do the digging and the planting and the praying.

The four year old, clad in his footed pajamas, carried the bucket of manure. Before each plant went into the hoed-out hole, a scoop of nature’s fertilizer went into the burrow.

We all found joy in the evening.

“Novels and garden,” she says. “I like to move from plot to plot.” Bill Richardson, Bachelor Brother’s Bed & Breakfast.

I’m so glad that Isaac and his family are living in my Mama’s house and neighbors with you and your family. Cousins are the best to grow up with. Granny Williams and Bruce Philpott (her Brother, Perry’s Grandpa) would be proud family is still important to us!
